10 tips to boost your career

What differentiates professionals in the market place?

Thinking of a straight, continuous, and growing line as career development can be a little risky, as your professional growth involves dozens of denominators that will make this path less obvious, but not necessarily difficult.

Mastering the skills required to carry out your duties at work is essential, but not the only one to succeed. There are a number of factors (internal and external) that will contribute to your career growth.

Here, I will mention some key points for you to become a prominent professional in the market place regardless of your area of performance.

It is very important that your personal satisfaction is first and foremost in any equation of your profession, the determining factor for any choice you make. With that in mind, all of your decisions will be based on something you genuinely want and, as a result, you will work better and happier - without seeing your daily journey as an obligation, but as part of your life, because even if the final destination of a trip is important, the route you will take to it must also be pleasant!

1. What are your career goals?

The first step in achieving your job satisfaction is knowing where you want to go! Establishing your professional goals right at the start helps you to see which paths you must take to reach your goal, whether in the short, medium or long term.

At this point, it is not necessary to contemplate the peak of your career, but rather how you see yourself professionally in the future is the beginning of the second stage of the process: planning.

2. Planning is the key

With the initial goals outlined, planning becomes essential as a second part of the process. When designing your action plan, it is possible to measure all the "tools" and the necessary ones to start your career and potentialize the journey.

Understand "tools" as all the processes necessary for you to develop your skills in order to achieve your goals. This can be done through training courses, searching for vacancies that fulfill the requirements of the professional profile you want to reach or even make investments in equipment you need.

3. Don´t be ashamed to ask for help

It is natural to find difficulties in the way, especially in our professional journey. There are many external factors that interfere with our work and routine and dealing with all of them, at the same time, can be extremely exhausting. Activating your support network or networking is very important right now. An external view can help to resolve the issue much more easily, seeing a possibility that you could not see before. But be careful! Do not become the person who only asks for help. Always be willing to talk to your network of contacts, helping whenever possible, is also essential and will make your reputation grow more and more.

4. Never stop learning

Finishing your undergraduate, or even a postgraduate, does not mean that you have already learned everything that is necessary for your career. Not only traditional courses contribute to your professional life. You can learn a lot everywhere! Be on the lookout for free courses, online courses, and discussion groups with topics that are interesting to you.

5. Never neglect networking

Taking your own actions is essential in the process of career development, but isolation is not an ally in any respect. Having your network of active professionals is very important because networking opens doors and offers opportunities that you would never have when walking alone.

This does not mean that your interpersonal relationships happen only with friends from work or in societies that are already in your routines, such as happy hours or lunches. The networking must be intrinsic to you and present at all hours of your day, inclusive in the conversation (apparently trivial) with your neighbor or in the conversation in the office waiting room.

Everywhere you can create contacts and connections for your work. Be and stay alert at all times!

6. Be clear with your communication

Accurate communication is essential for your career growth, even if you are shy. In addition to all the relationships you need to develop with coworkers, your way of transmitting information is also essential in meetings or project presentations. If you have any difficulties with this, it is important to consider exercises and courses that develop this skill in you. A theater or public speaking course can be essential in these situations. Consider them as an investment!

 7. Write down absolutely everything

Every thought can generate an incredible idea - and you can never lose them! So always keep your cell phone's notepad or, if you prefer, a notebook or diary. Your insights during your free time or in a course, lecture, meeting or workshop can be easily accessed to enhance a new project or remember a reference and stimulate your creativity, which should be another point to be worked on constantly.

 8. Your creativity is a muscle and needs to be exercised

When we do the same thing and have the same routine for a long time, our conscious "gets used" to this situation and stops innovating. So it is necessary to challenge yourself daily and stimulate your creativity with things outside your comfort zone.

Get out of the routine and try to get together in new places, carry out new leisure programs and consume different media, such as movies, music, or experiences.

It is enriching to open to subjects, themes, and inspirations that are not part of our scope of work. Your mindset needs constant exercise to think of new scenarios. This gives you more creativity to develop new action plans, in addition to the experiences and repertory you acquire for maintaining your interpersonal relationships since you will have subjects on different topics to approach your networking.

 9. Learn from your mistakes

Even professionals with years of experience also experience frustrations and make some types of mistakes over time, whether at the beginning or at their current career moment. It is important to remember that an error does not mean a total failure. There is much to learn from adverse situations in any area of life. This is part of our evolutionary process as individuals and also as professionals.

Resiliency, inclusive, is a word that we have to have as a mantra when we think about a career. When adverse situations happen, we need to stay strong to overcome the episodes and recover later.

10. Reinvent if necessary

And don't be afraid of changes!

It is possible that some opportunities are different from when we started our journey.  Taking advantage of those opportunities can be a unique chance that changes the course of your career and your happiness! In addition to this, there is also the scenario where we can find ourselves at any point in our career and realize that it is not how we would like things to be.

And why not tear up the map and retrace your path from scratch if necessary? Reinventing yourself and being ready for change is something incredible! Do not hold onto expectations that are not meeting yourself and start over whenever you feel it is necessary.

Being ok, with yourself, is your most powerful weapon to enhance your career. Invest in yourself and your well-being!

With much love and beauty,

Leslie
