Professional Makeup Artist tips for long wearing makeup

Skindinavia Setting Spray Blog

If you have an event or a photoshoot to attend, setting spray is a must-have in the whole make-up process. Not only does it hydrate your skin, it also helps prevent your makeup from fading away or from getting cakey. Whether you’re attending a long-haul event, shooting under the torrid heat of the summer sun, setting sprays help your make-up stay in place for long periods of time. Goodbye, smudges and hourly touch-ups!

In this blog, we talked to Leslie Hernandez, a professional make-up artist and the CEO of Backstage Makeup Professionals based in Dallas, Texas.

Tell us a little more about your scope of work - for the various shoots, jobs, and makeup styles, what percentage of those would you say that you use a setting spray?

Every time I do makeup, I always use a setting spray. To start with, I would use Skindinavia Primer Spray to prepare the skin. It’s my favorite so far because I love how smooth it makes the skin. It also awakens it because of its hydrating properties. After everything, I would always use the Finishing Spray to set every makeup I do. I call them my security blanket. It makes me feel confident as an artist that my client will look exactly how she left my studio during her whole event or photoshoot.

No matter if I’m at a photoshoot doing touch ups, I still rely on Skindinavia Setting Spray because the temperature control technology it has is a life saver when working under warm lights.

Can you tell us a little about each type of setting spray that Skindinavia offers and which jobs you use them for specifically? Do you see a difference in the finishes, the length of time it extends the makeup for, if they perform differently under different conditions, if some are better suited for certain climates, etc.?

During Texas summers, I rely on Primer Spray Oil Control and Finishing Spray Oil Control. Since it’s summer, the skin will produce more sweat and natural oils, so I use these products to make sure that the makeup will stay immaculate. If my client has very oily skin, I use these, too. One technique I do is that I would wet the beauty blender with the spray to add more oil control to the foundation.

When I want the skin to look fresh with natural radiance, I use Finishing Spray Bridal Edition. Any of these three products will effectively hold the makeup for 16 hours. . It will look intact from the moment I finish till the end of the photoshoot or event.

What makes Skindinavia unique compared to other brands or offerings?

Skindinavia has a patented technology that helps control the temperature of the skin: Temperature Control Technology. It basically makes your skin breathe for a full 16 hours, even when you have full makeup on. Skindinavia is unique because of this technology. The experts who worked on their products made clever use of science to solve the root cause of fading makeup: heat trapped in skin.   Its products are capable of drawing heat away from the skin and make sure that evaporation—sweat and oil—will be gradual.

The pump is also very unique. It delivers an even distribution of the products and the mist comes out very lightweight, so it feels very pampering to my clients. They even told me that themselves!

Do your clients ever contact you after jobs to ask what you used on them so they can learn more?

Yes, it is very common that I also get reviews from clients saying, “My makeup lasted all day!” or “I didn't touch up all day!” One of my clients even said, “I slept in my makeup and it was perfect the next day.” Of course, I definitely wouldn’t recommend doing the last one, but clients are always the best people who can put Skindinavia to the test.  They also tell me that whatever products they use at home doesn’t work like what I used on them at the studio, and they always want to know the secret. I love to share what I use, and I feel proud to say that I select professional products to use on them, which work much better than high-end products.

Are there any tips that you have on using setting spray? How can your techniques be applied to everyday makeup?

I applied the finishing spray to the sponge since it touches the face when it is a blank canvas. Then, I spray it in between makeup layers, depending on the look. At the end, I like to pamper my clients and give them a “spa-like experience” by applying several pumps. The mist feels so good at the end of a makeup session.

What about pre-makeup prep? Are there any products that you find work best in conjunction with Skindinavia or that you always keep in your kit?

Skindinavia Primer Spray works very good with any liquid or cream primer, and from any brand. The product complements any other primer, because its ingredients are filled with vitamins that other primers don’t have. It also simplifies skin prep, since it has a lot of hydrating benefits to wake the skin up and get it ready for makeup application.

Do you ever have customers who seem apprehensive about using setting spray? Help us dispel some of those preconceived notions!

Some clients or students think that setting spray has alcohol content, or that it has the same ingredients as hairspray, therefore drying their skin. Still, I explained to them that Skindinavia has technology and research behind it. Also, some are confused and think that the setting spray will make their makeup look shiny and dewy, especially when they have oily or combination skin types. I tell them that “oily” is different from “dewy and hydrated”. Setting sprays merely hydrate the skin, which is great for making the makeup look natural.

What would you say to the average makeup lover who wants to create mask-proof makeup? Should they still powder under the setting spray? How many times (how many pumps) should they spray their face after applying makeup? If you could break it down into a step-by-step format, that would be incredible - for example, "You can really go about your normal makeup routine when using setting spray! As always, makeup will apply best to a freshly washed and hydrated face, so I tend to use ____ before applying foundation. Next, _____. Finally, I recommend just ___ sprays of ____ applied in a ____ motion" - something like that where anyone could easily read it and know what you're referring to.

On a clean face, I apply primer spray. Then, I spray my sponge with the finishing spray before I dab the foundation. After the first layer of foundation, I spray finishing spray again. The closer the finishing spray is to the skin, the better its cooling technology will work, in my opinion.

Lastly, when I finish the makeup, I apply the finishing spray again by moving the bottle in a circular motion, and letting the clients enjoy the mist touching their face. Like I said, It’s a mini spa experience.
